Senate must reject federal funding of East-West white elephant, PTUA says

Senate-hearing.jpgMEDIA RELEASE: Public Transport Users Association President, Dr Tony Morton, will today be asking the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee to reject federal funding of wasteful road projects such as the East-West toll road.

“The Senate Committee needs to prioritise public transport so that Australian cities can catch up to today’s modern cities across North America and Europe where world-leading public transport is the norm,” Dr Morton said.

“Australia is the only country in the developed world where the federal government fails to invest in urban public transport infrastructure to ensure our cities remain competitive and liveable,” Dr Morton said.

“The federal government would be wasting $1.5 billion of Australian taxpayer’s money on the dirty, damaging and ineffective East-West toll road,” Dr Morton said.

“There should be no federal spending on toll roads until Infrastructure Australia has proven the project is consistent with its own urban transport strategy and delivers real productivity benefits for Australians,” Dr Morton said.

“Australian deserves world-leading public transport that is safe, convenient and affordable, and the federal government is pivotal in making that happen,” Dr Morton said.
